I worked for British Waterways and then CRT for 37 years and it would have been impossible not to have encountered John at some point. He was of course very passionate and would challenge us on occasions, but he was always fair and offered a very balanced perspective on our performance. It was always good to see a smile behind the magnificent grey Beard, John was obviously a trendsetter as he was ahead if the game with the 'designer beard'!
He will be missed and I was really disappointed that I only found out after his funeral.

I had the pleasure of getting to know John when I worked at British Waterways. John was often my ‘go to’ person whenever I needed some background, history or expert advice. What a passionate advocate of waterways! I will remember him as a kind, gentle man who contributed great things to the waterways over many, many years. He will be sadly missed.

I joined the IWA back in the70s and have worked with John on many projects and always found him friendly and helpful, he will be missed by many and the restoration movement will have a large space to be filled.
God bless you John and may you rest in peace
